The NIAID New Innovators Awards program is designed to support early-stage scientists pursuing compelling research projects without requiring extensive preliminary data. Our broader goal is to advance postdoctoral fellows into independent positions within an accelerated timeframe and support newly independent faculty members in their new positions. Successful applicants are well positioned to leverage the award while seeking a position as an independent investigator.

The next annual due date for new applications isn’t until October 11, 2024.

In the meantime, we invite you to learn about those exceptional researchers whose projects are already funded through this initiative. At NIAID New Innovators Awardees, we recently posted profile cards that share the affiliation, biography, award year, and project title of the 35 investigators who received new innovators (DP2) awards from the program's inception through fiscal year (FY) 2022. Each project title links to the corresponding Project Details page at NIH RePORTER, so you can find additional information like abstract text, funding details, publications, and similar projects.

We plan to add profile cards for FY 2023 awardees in due course. Scientific merit review of applications for FY 2024 awards is scheduled for March.

As Dr. Hugh Auchincloss, NIAID Principal Deputy Director, wrote in his Letter to Awardees:

“This important award opportunity enables bright young investigators to go in new directions with high-impact research. […] The awards help to reduce the barriers that young investigators can face in traditional funding opportunities and align with NIAID’s commitment to funding an extramural research portfolio inclusive of the diverse populations it serves.”

Lastly, our NIAID New Innovators Awards Program and Review Staff are ready to help if you are an early-stage investigator seeking guidance on how best to prepare a DP2 submission for next year.
