NIAID invites career development applications centered on nonhuman primate (NHP) model-based research through the funding opportunity announcement (FOA) Mentored Career Development Program for Early-Stage Investigators Using Nonhuman Primate Research Models (K01, Independent Clinical Trial Not Allowed).
This mentored research scientist development award (K01) opportunity aims to provide Early-Stage Investigators (ESIs) with 5 years of support and “protected time” for intensive research and career development under a mentorship team with expertise in both preclinical application of NHP models and in translation from research results to clinical application.
More broadly, this FOA aims to increase the number of research scientists with expertise in the use of NHP models to perform preclinical research designed to foster the translation of findings into humans.
NIAID Research Interests
NHPs serve as critical animal models for many research areas, including infectious diseases; social, cognitive, and behavioral research; reproductive biology; regenerative medicine; transplantation medicine; aging and neuroscience research, as well as for many FDA Animal Rule studies for licensure of products to treat chemical, biological, radiological, or nuclear threats.
Given the importance of the future model development and current use of NHPs for biomedical research, it is critical to maintain appropriately trained and skilled personnel who have the expertise needed to select the appropriate model and approach to best address each specific biomedical need.
By facilitating access to experienced mentors, relevant facilities, and protected time for training centered on NHP models, these K01 awards will help early-career scientists address key issues in clinically relevant research areas in a variety of fields after receiving targeted training and structured career development.
Budget Information
The annual budget request is capped at $75,000 annual salary and $100,000 towards other program-related experiences, such as tuition and fees, NHP-specific expenses, and travel to research meetings and training.
The maximum project period is 5 years.
The FOA follows NIH Standard Due Dates. The first application deadline for non-AIDS-related applications is February 12, 2023, by 5 p.m. local time of the applicant organization. The first deadline for AIDS-related applications is May 7, 2023.
