For applications due on or after October 5, 2023, you must follow new NIH budget instructions to request costs for your Data Management and Sharing (DMS) activities. Find full details in the July 31, 2023 Guide notice NIH Application Instruction Updates—DMS Costs.

As background, NIH originally instructed applicants to use a single “Data Management and Sharing Costs” line item on the R&R Budget Form. The single line item will no longer be required; NIH recognizes that DMS costs may occur in multiple cost categories.

The new instructions state that you must:

  • Request DMS costs in the appropriate cost category or categories—e.g., personnel, equipment, supplies, and other expenses.
  • Specify your estimated DMS cost details in the Budget Justification attachment of the R&R Budget Form or in the Additional Narrative Justification attachment of the PHS 398 Modular Budget Form.

NIH has already updated the How to Apply guide to reflect the new approach. Learn more about Budgeting for DMS, including Allowable Costs and how to write your Justification for DMS Costs.
