With Gratitude to Dr. Hugh Auchincloss, and a Welcome to Dr. Sarah Read

We congratulate Hugh Auchincloss, M.D., on his retirement after 18 years of service in NIAID leadership. You’ll recall, Dr. Auchincloss served as NIAID’s acting Director following the departure of former Director Dr. Anthony Fauci after nearly 40 years. Before that, his primary responsibilities involved research and strategic planning and implementation, as well as oversight of an extensive portfolio of basic, clinical, and applied research and product development. He ensured a smooth transition to Dr. Jeanne Marrazzo as our new Director last year.

Following a national search, Sarah Read, M.D., M.H.S., was named as the new NIAID Principal Deputy Director. After starting in 2001 as a clinic physician in the NIH Clinical Center’s Intramural AIDS Program, Dr. Read has worked in the Division of AIDS since 2006, and since 2018 has been the Deputy Director, where she oversaw its more than $1 billion HIV/AIDS research portfolio and clinical trials networks. Dr. Read also played a major role in the Accelerating COVID-19 Therapeutic Interventions and Vaccines (ACTIV) public-private partnership, leading a working group that prioritized candidate therapeutics to evaluate in master protocols, and she continues her key role in NIAID’s ongoing pandemic preparedness.

Loan Repayment Program Application Deadline Is November 21

If you are a doctoral-level clinician or researcher committed to conducting NIH-qualified clinical research, consider applying to the NIH Loan Repayment Program (LRP) to help reduce your educational debt. Successful applicants may receive up to $50,000 each year toward qualified educational debt, as explained in Eligibility & Programs. NIH’s Application Process Interactive Roadmap lays out the key steps for completing an LRP application.

You must have an eRA Commons ID to complete an LRP application. Submit your application electronically through the LRP Online Application system. But don’t delay: this year’s application window opened on September 1, and closes on November 21, 2024.
