NIAID relies on an automated process to determine the program officer assignment for each new award. These assignments are based primarily on the scientific area of each investigator-initiated application or the funding initiative for which a solicited application was submitted. Working with different program officers across several awards within the same general field of research is not unusual.

Refer to the Program Officials section of NIH’s Understand Staff Roles and our Program Officers SOP to learn more about program officers’ responsibilities. Find additional instruction at Understanding What Program Officials Can and Can’t Do for You.
