NIAID encourages you to apply through NIAID’s new Notice of Special Interest (NOSI): Using Targeted Degradation of Protein and Non-Protein Targets for the Development of Novel Anti-Infectives funding opportunity. The NOSI supports R01, R03, R21, and small business (R41 through R44) research grants.
In your application, describe how you will discover and develop novel anti-infective compounds that will use targeted protein degradation (TPD) of vital protein or, where appropriate, non-protein targets (e.g., ribonucleic acid [RNA]), of viral, bacterial, or fungal pathogens. Your research may include plans to target mechanisms that are integral for the replication, growth, survival, or virulence of a pathogen, including toxins (e.g., lethal and edema toxins of Bacillus anthracis) or toxin-related targets (e.g., toxin receptors) as novel anti-infectives.
Check the NOSI for details on responsive and nonresponsive topic areas. For example, you could plan to demonstrate in vitro degradation of specific targets, develop or optimize assays to assess functionality of degraders, determine substrates and kinetics of degrader interactions, determine rate-limiting factors, develop highly selective ligands, improve drug-like properties of degraders, and much more.
The NOSI is active from October 5, 2023, through July 16, 2026. Apply through one of the following notices of funding opportunity (NOFOs) or any subsequent reissues of these NOFOs:
- PA-20-185—NIH Research Project Grant (Parent R01, Clinical Trial Not Allowed)
- PA-20-195—NIH Exploratory/Developmental Research Grant Program (Parent R21, Clinical Trial Not Allowed)
- PA-20-200—NIH Small Research Grant Program (Parent R03, Clinical Trial Not Allowed)
- PA-23-232—PHS 2022-2 Omnibus Solicitation for Small Business Technology Transfer Grant Applications (Parent STTR R41/R42, Clinical Trial Not Allowed)
- PA-23-230—PHS 2022-2 Omnibus Solicitation for Small Business Innovation Research Grant Applications (Parent SBIR R43/R44, Clinical Trial Not Allowed)
For funding consideration under this NOSI, you must include “NOT-AI-23-049” (without quotation marks) in the Agency Routing Identifier field (box 4B) of the SF 424 R&R application form.
Direct your scientific/research questions on this NOSI to Dr. Raymond Slay at slayrn@niaid.nih.gov or 301-325-8578. Find peer review and grants management contacts in Section VII of your chosen NOFO.
