What does it take to develop exceptional scientists of the future? Two critical factors: excellent mentorship and superior training. To recognize the crucial role that great mentors play, NIH issued the Notice of Special Interest (NOSI): Administrative Supplements To Recognize Excellence in Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility (DEIA) Mentorship.
NIAID joins other participating institutes and centers (ICs) in providing administrative supplements to existing awards (across a broad range of activity codes), prioritizing outstanding mentors who:
- Will enhance outreach to scientists from diverse backgrounds
- Have demonstrated a commitment to outstanding mentorship and training, especially to individuals from groups identified as underrepresented in the biomedical sciences (e.g., see the Notice of NIH's Interest in Diversity)
- Have mentoring and/or mentorship as part of their existing awards
Since these are administrative supplements, proposed work must be within the scope of the research or training that is already supported. The award must have a component related to mentoring, e.g., a Research Education Program that describes mentored research experiences, a Career Development section, a Plan to Enhance Diverse Perspectives, or a discrete objective related to mentoring.
Eligibility
To be eligible, the parent award must be active, and the research proposed in the supplement must be accomplished within the competitive segment. The award may not be in a terminal no-cost extension or going into a no-cost extension in fiscal year 2022.
Funding and Budget Information
The Office of the Chief Officer for Scientific Workforce Diversity (COSWD) will fund the supplements and intends to fund applications from all participating ICs.
Applicants may request up to $250,000 in direct costs, not to exceed the direct costs of the parent grant, exclusive of Facilities and Administrative costs. Supplement awards may provide support above the established grant budget caps only for R15, R16, SC1, SC2, and SC3.
Application and Submission Information
Before applying, we encourage you to confirm eligibility and obtain technical assistance by consulting with the program official for the parent grant. If there are additional questions, the program official may email the NOSI’s contact: Dr. Pamela Tamez at pamela.tamez@nih.gov.
The application due date is April 7, 2022, by 5 p.m. local time of the applicant organization.
For funding consideration, applicants must include “NOT-OD-22-057” (without quotation marks) in the Agency Routing Identifier field (box 4B) of the SF 424 R&R Form. Applications without this information in box 4B will not be considered for this initiative.
