The Maximizing Opportunities for Scientific and Academic Independent Careers (MOSAIC) program aims to support researchers from diverse backgrounds. The MOSAIC program offers support through two components: individual postdoctoral career transition awards (K99/R00) and institutionally-focused research education cooperative agreements (UE5).

  • K99/R00. Awards provide independent NIH research support to promising postdoctoral researchers from diverse backgrounds before and after they transition from their mentored, postdoctoral research positions to independent, tenure-track or equivalent research-intensive faculty positions.
  • UE5. Organizations (e.g., scientific societies, academic institutions) use award funds to provide educational activities that equip MOSAIC K99/R00 scholars with professional skills, provide appropriate mentoring and professional networks, and allow scholars to transition into, advance, and succeed in independent academic research careers at research-intensive institutions.

Staff from the National Institute of General Medical Sciences will host a Webinar for NIH MOSAIC Program Applicants on September 12, 2023, from 1 to 3 p.m. Eastern Time. We strongly encourage potential K99/R00 applicants to attend.

Previously, academic institutions were not allowed to apply for the UE5 award. We likewise encourage potential UE5 applicants to attend, particularly if your organization is newly eligible for this novel initiative.

As a reminder, the K99/R00 notice of funding opportunity (NOFO) follows NIH’s Standard Due Dates or AIDS and AIDS-Related Due Dates, as applicable. The UE5 NOFO has one remaining due date on November 15, 2023.

NIAID's scientific/research contact for this initiative is Diane Adger-Johnson. To discuss your application plan and the institute’s priorities, email AITrainingHelpDesk@niaid.nih.gov or call 301-594-5945.
