Daming Zhu is a biochemist by training with many years of research experience relating to immunology and vaccinology and has co-authored more than 40 scientific articles in peer-reviewed journals. She is a recognized expert in quality control of vaccines, particularly with the protein-based vaccines. She led the quality control unit of LMIV and developed numerous quality control methods, including the slot blot assay for host cell protein impurities, the o-phthalaldehyde assay and direct Alhydrogel formulation immunoassay quantifying protein contents on Alhydrogel, combined UV and amino acid analysis of vaccine content in a conjugate platform, and efficient extraction of vaccines from Alhydrogel formulations. These methods are crucial to pre- and post-formulation characterization and analysis, and some of the procedures have been widely used in vaccine research and development. Her effort continues to focus on development of new methods for existing and new vaccine formulations and meeting the challenges of quality control of next generation vaccines.
