As detailed on our main Salary Cap, Stipends, & Training Funds page, NIH announced a new salary cap in a January 12, 2023 Guide notice and provided the latest National Research Service Awards (NRSA) stipend levels in a February 3, 2023 Guide notice. Here’s a quick overview of both notices.
Salary cap. Congress restricts the amount of direct salary paid to an individual under an HHS grant, cooperative agreement, or applicable contract. Effective January 1, 2023, the salary limitation is set at a rate of $212,100 for 100 percent effort. Your institution may use non-award funds to pay you beyond the cap. An individual’s terminal degree has no bearing on the salary cap. Find example salary cap calculations in the January 12 notice.
Stipend levels for NRSA trainees (T) and fellows (F). The HHS Secretary adjusts the NRSA stipend levels periodically (not necessarily every year) to reflect increases in the cost of living. As detailed in the February 3 notice, training-related expenses and institutional allowances reflect a moderate increase, while tuition and fees remain unchanged. Our NRSA Stipend Table shows the latest 12-month and 1-month levels.
