Biography

Dr. Bessman obtained a Ph.D. in biochemistry and biophysics from the University of Pennsylvania in 2014. There, he investigated how different endogenous ligands can induce unique signals through a single receptor. As an NIH-supported postdoctoral fellow, he worked with Dr. Gregory Sonnenberg at Weill Cornell Medicine, where he performed seminal studies on the dialogue between iron homeostasis, the innate immune system, and the microbiome within the context of inflammatory bowel disease. Dr. Bessman founded his independent laboratory at Rutgers University in 2021. The goal of the Bessman lab is to understand the molecular basis of intestinal health and disease.
