We invite you to consider an interagency funding opportunity, NSF 23-614, Smart Health and Biomedical Research in the Era of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Advanced Data Science, co-sponsored by the National Science Foundation (NSF) and NIH. As NIH announced in NOT-OD-23-165, NIH Participation in NSF 23-614, NIAID is one of the many participating NIH institutes and centers (ICs).
The Smart Health program supports development of transformative high-risk, high-reward advances in computer and information science, engineering, mathematics, statistics, behavioral, and/or cognitive research to address pressing questions in the biomedical and public health communities.
Register for the NSF-NIH Smart Health Solicitation Webinar on September 25, 2023, at 3 p.m. Eastern Time and use the following summary to learn more.
NIH and NIAID Areas of Focus
Find NIH specifics in NOT-OD-23-165, including contacts and statements of interest for each IC. For NIAID, be sure to check the full language of the NIAID Statement of Interest. Briefly, NIAID encourages applications that are relevant to the NIAID Mission in the following priority areas:
- Use mobile technologies to detect and track infectious diseases and immune-mediated disorders, measure and improve adherence to treatments, and/or enrich medical records with personal health information.
- Use electronic medical records, social media data, and/or other real-world data to detect and predict infectious- and immune-mediated diseases, emerging epidemics and allergic diseases, adverse events, adherence, and/or potential misinformation about vaccines and interventions.
- Curate social media and other real-world data to train machine-learning algorithms that can enable improvements to detection, treatment, and prevention.
- Rapidly curate and publish new information related to emerging epidemics in machine-actionable format for the biomedical community.
- Develop new privacy-preserving methods or applications to enable using social media and other real-world data for computational research, while protecting privacy, security, and addressing societal and ethical concerns (e.g., equity and unconscious biases).
Application Specifics
Carefully review the unique application process, instructions, and policies in the NIH Application Preparation and Submission section and the NSF 23-614 Program Guidelines. You must also follow the NSF Proposal and Award Policies and Procedures Guide (PAPPG).
Propose a project of up to 4 years and request a budget of no more than $300,000 per year. Be sure to include funds for your travel to annual Smart Health meetings. Do not include voluntary committed cost sharing. For NIH, indirect costs on foreign subawards are limited to 8 percent.
The first due date is November 9, 2023, by 5 p.m. in the applicant organization’s time zone.
If you plan to submit a proposal in NIAID’s areas of science, direct your questions to NIAID’s Office of Data Science and Emerging Technologies at datascience-foa@niaid.nih.gov. Find contacts for NSF and other NIH ICs through the first two links above.
