Modern biomedical research techniques, such as the study of genomes and the application of artificial intelligence, require advanced computational and data science. We call the application of this science "bioinformatics." Bioinformatics accelerates scientific discovery and unlocks new avenues for medical treatment.

NIAID's Work in Bioinformatics
NIAID is a leader in the field of bioinformatics and our work is growing and expanding as technologies advance. Research groups at NIAID support the bioinformatics needs of our internal principal investigators and labs as well as external researchers. NIAID supported contracts combined with internally developed technologies offer services related to bioinformatics. For example, our Bioinformatics Resource Centers for Infectious Diseases program offers robust computational platforms to data-driven tools and standards to the infectious diseases research community. In addition, the Office of Data Science and Emerging Technologies is dedicated to data science in general to help guide larger and more complex data challenges as well as direct data sharing policy.
