NIAID Strives to End the Use of Stigmatizing Language

NIAID’s Division of AIDS released an updated NIAID HIV Language Guide in May based on feedback from many community groups, advisory and working groups, and other NIH institutes and centers. Like the original guide, created in February 2020, this edition outlines best practices to use empowering rather than stigmatizing language.

The NIAID HIV Language Guide has relevance beyond HIV as well. It includes language related to other areas of research, diseases and conditions, gender and sexuality, general research terminology, and more.

NIAID Director Dr. Jeanne Marrazzo discussed the revised resource in her NIAID Now Blog post Our Words Have Power—NIAID Embraces Respectful, Inclusive, and Person-First Language.

Contract Vendors Can Submit Inclusion Data Directly into HSS

The eRA system now allows research and development contractors to submit and update data associated on participant inclusion in clinical research directly into the Human Subjects System (HSS) upon request by NIH staff. Previously, contractors sent data in a PDF form over email to be manually entered by NIH staff into HSS.

To access HSS, the contractor must be registered in eRA Commons. The signing official can create Commons accounts for any principal investigators who will enter information in HSS. Refer to the June 6, 2024 Guide notice for further instruction.
