NIH and CDC published the notice of funding opportunity (NOFO) Administrative Supplements to Promote Diversity in Research and Development Small Businesses—SBIR/STTR (Admin Supp, Clinical Trial Not Allowed) which offers funding to small business concerns (SBCs) supported by Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) and Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) to enhance the diversity of the research and entrepreneurial workforce.
SBCs can do so by recruiting, mentoring, and supporting students, postdoctoral scholars, and eligible investigators from diverse backgrounds, including those from groups that have been shown to be underrepresented in health-related research or in SBIR and STTR programs.
Research Objectives
For the purpose of this announcement, NIH encourages SBCs to recruit individuals who will enhance diversity of the national research and entrepreneurial workforce, including those from Underrepresented Groups in Health-Related Research.
The activities proposed in the supplement application must fall within the scope of the parent grant, and simultaneously advance the objectives of the parent grant and support the research training and professional development of the supplement candidate. Keep in mind, this NOFO does not allow for applicants proposing research that involves leading an independent clinical trial, a clinical trial feasibility study, or an ancillary study to a clinical trial. However, applicants to this NOFO are permitted to propose research experience in a clinical trial led by a mentor or co-mentor.
Additionally, NIH SEED has exemplary Sample Career Development/Mentorship Plans as well as guidance on other application components.
Award Information
Award budgets cannot exceed the amount of the current parent award and must reflect the actual needs of the candidate’s research and training. Direct costs for individual administrative supplements vary from less than $5,000 to more than $100,000 depending on the career level of the candidate. NIAID, as the awarding institute, may further limit budget requests.
Applicants should refer to the NOFO for guidance on specific budget caps. If your current award’s budget is already at the cap limit specified in the NOFO, your grant is ineligible to receive additional support through this opportunity.
Application Due Date
NIAID receives and accepts applications on a rolling basis and reviews them monthly. Applications should be submitted on the first day of the month at least 12 weeks in advance of the proposed start date.
If you’re seeking funding to support a high school or undergraduate student for summer work, apply no later than February 1 so that we may consider your application for the summer of the same calendar year.
This opportunity will expire on October 14, 2027.
