NIH Autoimmune Diseases Coordinating Committee

Coordination of autoimmune disease research is one of the directives of the new NIH Office of Autoimmune Disease Research (OADR) in the Office of Research on Women’s Health. Prior to the establishment of OADR, NIAID chaired the NIH Autoimmune Diseases Coordinating Committee (ADCC), which was established in 1998 at the request of Congress. The purpose of the ADCC was to facilitate coordination of research across the National Institutes of Health (NIH), federal agencies, professional societies, and patient and advocacy organizations with an interest in autoimmune diseases. The ADCC’s final meeting was held in December 2022. The role of the ADCC has been assumed by the OADR.

ADCC Reporting Requirements

The ADCC prepared three individual reports for Congress in 2000, 2002, and 2005. The NIH Reform Act of 2006 (Pub. L. 109-482) replaced many of the disparate reports required by law from NIH Institutes and Centers with one comprehensive biennial account to Congress (2006 – 2015).  An amendment to the Reform Act now requires the submission of a Triennial Report to Congress. Reporting of autoimmune disease research is now included in Chapter 3 of the NIH Triennial Report.
