What is the Pathways Program?
The National Institutes of Health (NIH) Pathways Program offers three “paths” to employment for current students and recent graduates.
- Internship Program: designed to give current students the opportunity to join the NIH and gain a valuable experience while preparing for a career with us.
- Recent Graduate Program: designed to provide developmental experience to promote possible careers at the NIH to those who have recently graduated
- Presidential Management Fellows Program: the federal government’s premier leadership development program for advanced degree candidates, focuses on developing a cadre of potential government leaders
Interns may be converted to a permanent federal position (or, in some limited circumstances, to a term position lasting 1-4 years) within 120 days of successful completion of the program.
Who Can Apply?
- Current students in an accredited high school, college (including 4-year colleges/universities, community colleges); and trade school; advanced degree programs; or other qualifying certificate programs.
- U.S. Citizen or non-U.S. citizen, national or legal permanent resident
- Candidates at least 16 years old, who obtain/maintain a minimum unweighted cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale, and must maintain student eligibility for the duration of the internship
