NIAID postbac fellow Hailey Johnson will represent NIAID in the 2023 NIH Three-minute Talk (TmT) Competition on June 22, 2023, after winning the NIAID competition that was held in early May. Hailey is a fellow in the Laboratory of Parasitic Diseases, Systems Genomics Section, under the mentorship of section chief, Elodie Ghedin, Ph.D. The NIH Three-minute Talk Competition occurs annually as part of an effort to improve efficient scientific communication while also showcasing the amazing research carried out by fellows across the NIH. This year’s NIH participants will include fellows from all training levels from NINDS, NLM, NHGRI, NEI, NICHD, NIDCR, NIDCD, NCATS, NIDDK, NIAMS, NIEHS and NIAID.
In April, NIAID hosted a training session titled “How to Give a Three-minute Talk” that provided detailed guidance on what works best for effective short talks. Hailey, whose talk was titled “Identification of Brugia malayi microRNAs Involved in Wolbachia-Host Symbiosis,” used a particular approach described in the training session that focused on the concepts underlying her work, as opposed to two other approaches that spotlight the research approach or the data. Hailey effectively used her concept talk to create a story that emphasized the impact of her research question. Using only one slide, she created a beautiful visual accompaniment that emphasized her auditory narrative without competing with it. No easy task!
