The National Biosafety and Biocontainment Training Program (NBBTP)/Intramural Research Training Award (IRTA) offers two-year postbaccalaureate and postdoctoral fellowships.
The mission and vision of the NBBTP/IRTA Fellowship is to prepare biosafety and biocontainment professionals of the highest caliber to meet the needs of the biomedical, emerging disease and civilian biodefense research communities through the 21st century. During this multi-faceted and rigorous program, NBBTP/IRTA Fellows will engage in experiential and didactic learning opportunities in a variety of fields relevant to biorisk management. If selected, you can expect to graduate from the program with a strong skill set and expert knowledge of biorisk principles and practices, enabling you to face the challenges unique to 21st century biomedical research.
History
The NBBTP Fellowship was established in 2006 through a partnership between the Division of Occupational Health and Safety (DOHS) and the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland. As of January 2020, the NBBTP has been part of the NIH Intramural Research Training Award (IRTA) program and is now known as the NIH NBBTP/IRTA Fellowship.
The NBBTP/IRTA offers specialized training that has launched new career opportunities in safety, science, and biomedical research for over 15 years. The NBBTP/IRTA has successfully trained Fellows to meet our Nation’s numerous challenges in biodefense research and emerging infectious disease response capabilities. NBBTP/IRTA alumni serve in diverse support and leadership roles such as biosafety officers and responsible officials for select agent research as well as international biosafety consultants and policy advocates. There continues to be a demand for well-trained biosafety professionals to assist the research community with risk assessments on planned research, as well as potential biological threats.
