NIAID launched the Centers for Research in Emerging Infectious Diseases Network (CREID Network) in August 2020. The network’s ten research centers are situated around the globe and, along with a coordinating center, conduct in-depth research into the emergence and transmission of emerging infectious diseases. The knowledge generated by CREID researchers could help public health officials rapidly respond in the event that an emerging disease becomes a heath crisis. One key component of the CREID Network is the Pilot Research Program, which provides financial support and mentorship opportunities to early-career researchers. The program focuses on training the next generation of emerging infectious disease researchers to build expertise and research capacity around the world.
The CREID Network Pilot Research Program is designed for researchers who are in the early stages of their careers, including applicants from lower- and middle-income countries. The program goes beyond monetary support to provide comprehensive mentoring and skill-building activities. In addition to funding for up to $150,000 towards their research project, each awardee is affiliated with a CREID Research Center and has a mentor who can provide opportunities to discuss their research ideas and receive critical feedback. Mentors can also provide connections to other researchers working on complementary projects and help the pilot awardee develop their professional network. The program will also include formal training that will help awardees with the skills necessary to design, implement, and assess their research projects. In addition to the formal mentoring and training, the program participants can share information and engage in peer-to-peer mentoring within their own cohort. A CREID network annual meeting will provide further opportunities for awardees to learn, network, and present their research.
The first six CREID pilot program awards were announced in May. More detail about the awardees’ research projects can be found here: https://creid-network.org/pilot-program. The CREID Network Coordinating Center is currently seeking applications for the second round of the Pilot Research Program. Interested applicants are encouraged to watch the informational webinar and email info@creid-network.org with questions.
