Questions and Answers for Notice of Special Interest (NOSI)—Competitive Revision Applications to Existing T32 Programs to Include Institutional Research Training in Data Science for Infectious and Immune Mediated Diseases

NIH published NOT-AI-24-012, Notice of Special Interest (NOSI): Competitive Revision Supplements to Existing T32 Programs to Include Institutional Research Training in Data Science for Infectious and Immune Mediated Diseases on April 4, 2024.

Updated August 6, 2024. We added the second and third questions below.

Each time we add new questions or revise, we will revise the dated note shown at the top of this page to describe the latest update.

Applicants must have at least two full budget periods remaining in the original award relative to the due date of their application. These due dates are September 25, 2024 (Non-AIDS) and January 7, 2025 (AIDS), by 5:00 p.m. local time of the applicant organization.

Through this NOSI, applicants may increase the number of training slots for the NIAID Data Science Training Program (NDSTP) beyond the T32 maximum allowed. The training slots proposed via this NOSI must support trainees pursuing a data science curriculum as described in the NOSI. It is anticipated that an application will propose two or three additional data science training slots and three or four awards are anticipated.

Please note, this is a one-time exception for additional slots and the additional funding for the NDSTP will not extend beyond the funding period of the NOSI.

A Competing Revision application is a request for an increase in support in a current budget period for expansion of the project’s approved scope that will go through the peer-review process. Note that competing revision replaces the previous NIH term “competing supplement.” We highlight the information provided in the NIH Grants & Funding resource for Competing Revisions for additional guidance.

  1. The revision application will reflect a revision of the elements of your original application where there will be changes from the initial submission. For elements of the initial application that remain unchanged, you do not need to revise those sections.
  2. Revision applications must be submitted by the same project director/principal investigator (PD/PI), or Contact PD/PI for multi-PI grants, as listed on the current award.
  3. Use the Introduction to Application field of the PHS 398 Research Plan form to attach a one-page Introduction that describes the nature of the revision and how it will influence the Specific Aims, research design, and methods of the current grant.
    1. For multi-project applications this is required in the overall component and is optional in other components.

We strongly urge you to discuss your application with the program officer of your existing T32 award. Please review the specific instructions in the NOSI and the linked resources for more specific details.

Check the Inquiries section of the NOSI for contact information and the NIH scientific/research contact.
