Program Description

Dr. Gozalo provides clinical care for different species of laboratory animals used by NIAID investigators including rodents (mice, rats, thicket rats, hamsters, and guinea pigs), ferrets, and poultry. In addition, Dr. Gozalo performs pre-committee review of animal use protocols, assist investigators prepare animal use protocols and review animal use protocols as a member of the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee. Supervises work with infectious agents according to CDC’s Biosafety in Microbiological and Biomedical Laboratories (BMBL) 5th edition recommendations. Provides guidance to NIAID investigators and assures compliance with applicable federal, state, and local laws and regulations, such as the Animal Welfare Act and Animal Welfare Regulations, the Public Health Service Policy on Humane Care and Use of Laboratory Animals, and the National Research Council Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals. Dr. Gozalo also investigates spontaneous diseases in laboratory animals and prepare results for presentation at professional meetings and publication in scientific journals.

Dr. Gozalo obtained his D.V.M. from Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos, Lima, Peru, in 1985 and a M.S. degree in animal health from the same university in 2000. After finishing veterinary school, Dr. Gozalo worked for a short time in a small animal practice and then as a swine veterinarian. In 1987 he joined the Peruvian Primate Center located in the Amazon rainforest of Peru where he worked as the laboratory chief and later as the head clinical veterinarian. In 1995 he joined the U.S. Naval Medical Research Center Detachment in Lima, Peru, where he worked as the attending veterinarian and helped establish malaria, dengue, and campylobacter vaccine research programs using owl monkeys. In 2004 he completed a laboratory animal medicine training program through the Division of Laboratory Animal Medicine, David Geffen School of Medicine, University of California, in Los Angeles. Later that same year Dr. Gozalo joined NIAID and in 2006 successfully completed the certifying examination and election to membership in the American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine being currently an ACLAM Diplomate. Dr. Gozalo's main interests are infectious diseases and identifying spontaneous diseases in laboratory animals that can be used as models of human disease. Dr. Gozalo has over 50 peer-reviewed scientific publications and two book chapters in laboratory animal medicine, a Merit Award for discovery of novel pathology in Neotropical Nonhuman primates and a Merit Award and an Exemplary Performance of Duty Award presented by NIAID. In addition, Dr. Gozalo has a Meritorious Honor Award presented by the U.S. Department of State for his contributions to science. Dr. Gozalo assists the Malaria Vaccine Development Branch with their malaria research in non-human primates. He is also the facility veterinarian for NIAID CMB Twinbrook III animal facility.
