Alfonso S. Gozalo, D.V.M., M.S.

Dr. Gozalo obtained his D.V.M. from Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos, Lima, Peru, in 1985 and a M.S. degree in animal health from the same university in 2000. After finishing veterinary school, Dr. Gozalo worked for a short time in a small animal practice and then as a swine veterinarian. In 1987 he joined the Peruvian Primate Center located in the Amazon rainforest of Peru where he worked as the laboratory chief and later as the head clinical veterinarian. In 1995 he joined the U.S. Naval Medical Research Center Detachment in Lima, Peru, where he worked as the attending veterinarian and helped establish malaria, dengue, and campylobacter vaccine research programs using owl monkeys. In 2004 he completed a laboratory animal medicine training program through the Division of Laboratory Animal Medicine, David Geffen School of Medicine, University of California, in Los Angeles. Later that same year Dr. Gozalo joined NIAID and in 2006 successfully completed the certifying examination and election to membership in the American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine being currently an ACLAM Diplomate. Dr. Gozalo's main interests are infectious diseases and identifying spontaneous diseases in laboratory animals that can be used as models of human disease. Dr. Gozalo has over 50 peer-reviewed scientific publications and two book chapters in laboratory animal medicine, a Merit Award for discovery of novel pathology in Neotropical Nonhuman primates and a Merit Award and an Exemplary Performance of Duty Award presented by NIAID. In addition, Dr. Gozalo has a Meritorious Honor Award presented by the U.S. Department of State for his contributions to science. Dr. Gozalo assists the Malaria Vaccine Development Branch with their malaria research in non-human primates. He is also the facility veterinarian for NIAID CMB Twinbrook III animal facility.
